so in honor of the recent academy awards here are a couple of movie reviews. totally unrelated to the goings on from sunday, but reviews none the less.
shutter island. just saw this in the theaters a couple of weeks ago. ok, i love leo (politics aside) & mark & psychological thrillers & scorsese (for the most part), but even with all that, the movie just didn't deliver. It's an old story line that has been done many times in many ways so it really needs to be delivered in a creative manner in order not to be a "been there, done that" scenario. well, it missed the mark in my opinion. i liked the nostalgic feel of the movie; as a hitchcock fan, i have to say that was the most appealing part of the movie to me. otherwise i kept waiting and waiting and waiting and even after the twist was revealed i was still waiting, because it was so predictable in my opinion. maybe it just means i have seen too many of these types of movies....who knows. if i had to condense my review: dvd.
my sisters keeper. i saw this on dvd (cearly) about a week ago. i don't know if it was my state of mind (i saw it while laid up in bed) or what, but it touched me, really touched me. i have to say i really, really LiKed the movie. now customarily this is not the type of movie one "likes" per se since it's such a tear jerker & downer. but in a twisted way it was uplifting. it was one of my book club picks, but i never read the book at the time. now i wish i had. i don't know if i want to go back & read it now that i've seen the movie. who knows, maybe one of these days i'll pick it up after enough time has passed since watching the movie. abigail breslin was fantastic as she always is. i remember seeing her for the first time in little miss sunshine (a disturbingly funny movie) and she was great in that and she's been great in everything i've ever seen her in. she's only 13 and has already been nominated for an academy and her next project apparently is playing helen keller on broadway. not bad, huh? & would love to see that. the mother is played by cameron diaz, whom i have nothing against or for. customarily she plays in much lighter material and i have to admit i was pleasantly surprised to see what a wonderful job she did. other actors to note who had smaller roles, but delivered them just as fabulously~ jason patric, alec baldwin, joan cusack. condensed review: kleenex.
regarding sunday, i already had the blindside on my list, but now i have added the hurt locker. i had no previous desire to see avatar and that sentiment remains the same. i thought the host combo was ok, not fab but entertaining enough. that's all she wrote.
